Psalm 27

h2oPsalm 27 is an incredible Psalm. It is full of perspective, proper perspective. I say this because for many, me included, January feels like a dry month. In January one often feels a bit “hung over” from the Christmas season. The parties and festivities are over and now it is back to the normal routine. With not as much to look forward to on the calendar, one may wonder why they do what they do, why the things of a normal week are even there, what is the purpose of it all. And so we read Psalm 27.

We may not have the literal enemies stalking us, seeking to devour us, but we can feel the desperation in the Psalmist’s voice, at least on some level. And yet, desperation is not the tone of the Psalm at all. It is a Psalm of security, safety and power. The Psalmist knows who they are talking about; God is powerful; God is merciful; and, God is our place of true peace.

And so, in the midst of January, in midst of a possible dry season, we have hope. We can say the words of verse 13 with confidence, “I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living,” that yes, we will enjoy goodness while we still breathe, even in a season of desolation. And, we can hear the encouragements from the Psalmist in verse 14, “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”

We have hope, true hope, so may we live in hope this week and this season.

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
