Hope in Hosea

UnknownIn the midst of reading the prophets, one can get blue and think God is just an angry old man, who keeps yelling at us for being too loud or stepping on his lawn, and now is bent on unnecessary vengeance. But that’s not the case. Often times in the prophetic books of the Bible the Lord is attempting to correct unjust behavior, to call His people away from the siren songs that will cause their death. The words may seem harsh, but God’s heart is one of love and compassion. Often times after His rebukes and calls to turn back, God gives us pictures of His hope, of the ways things should be and will be in the end. Hosea 14:4-8 is one such passage. After correcting His people God offers this great passage of hope and restoration.

As you read the prophets, remember to take the long view of the passage, the ultimate message being delivered, and remember God’s heart of love. Check out the passage below and see what I mean. Blessings to you in your readings.

4 The Lord says,
“Then I will heal you of your faithlessness;
    my love will know no bounds,
    for my anger will be gone forever.
5 I will be to Israel
    like a refreshing dew from heaven.
Israel will blossom like the lily;
    it will send roots deep into the soil
    like the cedars in Lebanon.
6 Its branches will spread out like beautiful olive trees,
    as fragrant as the cedars of Lebanon.
7 My people will again live under my shade.
    They will flourish like grain and blossom like grapevines.
    They will be as fragrant as the wines of Lebanon.

8 “O Israel, stay away from idols!
    I am the one who answers your prayers and cares for you.
I am like a tree that is always green;
    all your fruit comes from me.”
