Getting What We Pray For

pray.21 John 5:14-15: 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

This passages hinges on the statement “according to His will.” We have many “gimme” prayers, selfish plans that we ask God to endorse. But here we read that whatever we ask according to His will, He hears. God listens to the requests that correspond to His desires, His plans. Plans that we create, based off purely selfish desires, He will not respond to. He knows what is best for us, and He gives to us according to His will.

So how do we know His will? We can ask Him to give us understanding. We can stay connected to Him in His word. And we can listen to His Spirit. If we are not sure about what His will is, we can always be honest and say to Him, “God I’m not sure about this, but if it is Your will, make it so. Help me to hear Your voice and Your will for me.” God wants to converse with us, so converse. He is listening.

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
